The roof is going on and the siding. It looks kind of funny because they covered up the windows. We are slowly getting there.

Casey Group Picture

This is a group shot of the Caseys. Mom thought that Grandma Kier and Granddad Kier were in the front. Aunt Edna is the little girl with the glasses. In the back row the baby is Thomas Casey Jr. (Bobby, Barbara, and Tom's Dad ) The woman on the end holding the baby is Charley Casey's wife . Charles Casey is next to her. I will put the rest of the names in as soon as I can figure them out.

I do not know when this picture was taken. Probably around 1940 or 1950. Left to Right it is Aunt Edna Casey, Uncle Ken Kier and Grandma Mary Elizabeth "Mae" Casey Kier. It was most likely taken in the Bronx.

Mary Elizabeth Casey and George Edward Kier My Grandparents

Often my cousins have asked me to write about our family as I am the one with the memories and I am going to try to do that for them. As in all families there are two sides to ours. We are most familiar with the Irish side of the family and most likely inherited more of that culture. Consequently, I will start with the Irish.

My mother's mom was named Mary Elizabeth Casey and everyone called her "Mae". She was very Irish looking. It is my understanding that Casey was originally O'Casey. Grandma was born August 1891 in New York City. She died March 19, 1961, in New York. She was 2 years older than my Grandfather. In 1912 she married George Edward Kier in St. Rose of Lima church in New York City. The name was originally von Keuer. According to my mother's records they were from Prussia.

Mary Casey's father was Michael Casey. He was born  in about 1856 in Tipperary, Ireland. He was about 2 years old when he came to this country. He died August 15, 1897 and is buried in St. Raymond Cemetery, Grave 1, Section3, Range 12, Plot 30. He was a New York policeman.

Mary Casey's mother was Mary Hennessey. She was born in 1855 in Brooklyn, New York. She died in 1933 in Riverdale, Bronx, New York. They had 11 children. I will provide more information on them later. However, if I am to complete this project in some kind of orderly manner I need to stay on task.

Mary Casey lived next door to the Kiers when both families lived in Manhattan. Later the Caseys moved and my grandfather used to ride his bike to see Mary.

Michael Casey and Mary Hennessey married in 1875 in Manhattan, New York.

My grandfather George Edward Kier lost his father when he was young. My genealogical research indicated that a lot of our ancestors grew up in single parent family homes due to the death of one of the parents. As a result, my grandfather went through the 6th grade and then had to go to work. He started in the mail room at a famous construction company in New York named Eidlitz.Construction of the Empire State Building-Eidlitz Construction and Robert Eidlitz Page 3. Here is a New York Times article about the company Court House New York City. This company was responsible for many NYC projects like the Cloisters which is a Medieval Museum on the Hudson River. It was a castle which was brought from Europe and reconstructed at its present site, stone by stone. The Eidlitz firm was in charge of the museum's construction. Many of the projects specified that George Edward Kier be in charge. After he died Rockefeller pulled the contract for the Riverside Church to be built in Manhattan.

"The Cloisters is a museum located in Fort Tryon Park, New York City. The building, which is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was reconstructed in the 1930s from the architectural elements of several European medieval abbeys. It is used to exhibit art and architecture from Medieval Europe."

Another Rockefeller family project was the Rockefeller Institute. I was 2 or 3 years old when I had my tonsils out at the Rockefeller Institute. My parents paid next to nothing for the operation. Once I visited the Bronx Zoo with my mother. I fell in love with the mouse house. She had me call my grandfather and ask for a pair of mice. They came from the Rockefeller Institute because my grandfather was working on construction at their site.

My grandfather George Kier died at age 59 and I was 10. I loved him so very much because he made me feel very special. When I was little he took me to Coney Island to go on the rides. I had never seen the ocean before and begged to go in the water. I must have been 4 or 5 years old. He took my clothes off and let me go in the water wearing my underwear. I came running out of the water saying, " Granddaddy, Grandaddy somebody put salt in the water."

Good Night to all and God bless.

More to come. Stay tuned.

I can't wait till the cement dries and they can get started. I am so excited to see what it looks like. I have started subbing for the school nurses. Lots of interesting experiences. I was at Wasilla HS yesterday and today. Tomorrow they are having an orientation. I get to go to my daughter's school next week. It is all an adventure.
